Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

An eukaryote is an organism formed by one or more complex cells whit well-developed subcellular compartment, in which the genetic material (DNA) is organized into a nucleus.
They include all the complex life forms animals, plants, and fungi, which are mostly multicellular, as well as various other groups called protists, many of which are unicellular.

Differently other primitive organisms (such as bacteria, cyanobacteria and viruses) lack nuclei and other complex cell structures, and are called prokaryotes. The eukaryotes share a common origin, and are often treated formally as a superkingdom, empire, or domain.
