  The property or ability of an organism to change its characteristics from one generation to the other. The quality of being capable of mutation.

  The sum of different genotypic or phenotypic characters within a given taxa or population.  
  • Variability of genotypes (Genetic diversity) The differences in the genetic make up among populations of a single species and among individuals within a population.
  • Variability (heterozygosity): Absence of uniformity, usually referring to lack of genetic uniformity in a population.
  • Variability among living organisms (biodiversity): the variability among living organisms from all sources including, among other things, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are a part; this includes diversity within species (Genetic diversity), between species (Species diversity) and of ecosystems (Ecosystem diversity)
  • Variability (aberrance): Manifest diversity or difference, divergence to true type
  • Variability of population (The proportion or ratio of organisms within a community) Instead of counting each and every organism, scientists measure the variability of populations to look for change over time. For example in a given population the variability may be 4 females for every 3 male.

  The tendency to vary or fluctuate around an average or expected value, or around a specific average pattern.  
The statistical measure of variability (variance) is a measure of the dispersion of a set of values about its mean.
